Ambulatory Microphlebectomy

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is the removal of varicosities through incisions that do not require stitches. Very small skin incisions are used to extract veins with a phlebectomy hook. The hook is inserted into the opening and a section of vein is hooked and removed though the incision. Many small incisions are made over the course of the vein for complete removal. A compression bandage is placed over the incisions and compression hose are worn for one week.

The procedure is performed in the office and the length of the procedure is normally between one and three hours. After arrival to the office, the patient will be taken to an exam room to change into a patient gown. The veins will be marked and the procedure will be discussed in detail with the patient. Any further questions will be answered before the procedure begins.

Post procedure instructions are fairly minimal. Compression hose are to be worn for one week following the procedure. Walking is encouraged, but refrain from strenuous activity and heavy lifting for one week. Ibuprofen or tylenol can be taken as needed for discomfort. A two week leg check appointment will be made for follow up.

Microphlebectomy usually does does lead to complications. Possible complications include short-term skin changes, infection or pain.
